Traditional Bridal Lehengas

No bridal trousseau or look can be complete without a traditional bridal lehenga. No matter the fantasy surrounding a ‘new-age’ bridal look, there will always be a place, that special corner that will be reserved for your traditional lehenga. From revamping your mother’s or grandmother’s bridal attire to wearing the creations of rich karigaris of this land, there is no dearth of choices when it comes to picking the right traditional lehenga for your wedding festivities. There can be no better example than the breathtaking creations of Sabyasachi lehengas that are a vibrant mix of heritage, royalty and beauty. So if you’re thinking of traditional bridal lehengas, you’re most certainly thinking of Sabyasachi creations! Bold reds, deep colours, intricate work and extensive detailing render Sabyasachi’s bridal lehengas timeless. Remember when Deepika Padukone wed Ranveer Singh in a red Sabyasachi lehenga with intricate hand-embroidery golden tilla details paired with a chowki design aari-taari dupatta with a heavy border and the age-old saying ‘Sada Saubhagyavati Bhava’ written on it in Devnagri?!

Another celebrated designer duo whose creations display elegant and exquisite traditional designs are Abu Jani and Sandeep Khosla. Their chikankari creations are absolutely breathtaking and their use of mirror works in lehengas have been instrumental in reboosting this age-old design style. Be it Sonam Kapoor’s gorgeous ivory mehendi lehenga or Priyanka Chopra who opted for a playful mehendi outfit: a rainbow-hued lehenga that came with a half-sleeved blouse, a billowing skirt, and a lightweight dupatta. The set was accentuated with floral motifs and stripes in highlighter hues of yellow, green and pink.

And who can forget Isha Ambani’s bridal lehenga that was an ode to deep personal history and legacy?! It featured a 16-panelled ghagra in two shades of off-white. Each panel was hand-embroidered, and was accentuated with alternating Mughal jaalis combined with floral panels in the finest zardozi, vasli, mukaish and nakshi work. Every flower and jaali was further highlighted with crystals and sequins. Fully embellished in gold vasli jaali with tiny flowers, the tulle dupatta draped on the head had a 20-metre trail and was fully embroidered in sequins and crystal jaal whereas for her Mehndi, Antara Motiwala chose a custom-made Manish Malhotra chikankari lehenga that featured floral artwork and pearls which was teamed with an aqua blue dupatta with millions of flowers!

Be it beauteous brocade lehengas, heavily embroidered floral lehengas or heritage-inspired ethnic lehengas, there is plenty of room for you to nail your bridal look. Brides today are beautifully striking a balance by pairing their embellished traditional lehenga with vintage jewellery and going easy on the makeup. Rana Dagubatti’s bride, Miheeka Bajaj looked like a vision to behold when she walked the aisle in an intricately embroidered Anamika Khanna lehenga. Miheeka teamed her wedding lehenga with heavy neckpieces, earrings and matha patti by her home brand, Krsala Jewellery that added to her bespoke look. Interestingly the bride balanced her ensemble with subtle makeup by celebrity makeup artist Tamanna Rooz. Rooz created a very natural and fresh look for the bride with earthy hues, smoky eyes and coral lip colour shade to balance her entire look!

Just like Miheeka, there have been a long list of real brides in recent times who have chosen to pair their traditional bridal lehenga with minimal makeup, and how have they shined!

Even when it comes to nail the hairstyle that matches your traditional lehenga, there is so much you can do. From bold buns to seamless curls to a whole range of floral-inspired hairstyles, sky’s the limit!

Contemporary Bridal Lehengas

Contemporary bridal lehengas offer a unique blend of creative patterns, bold designs, eclectic colours and spunky elements. While some brides like to keep it classic, others prefer it to be quiet. Some are hell-bent on OTT and some seek solace in not going OTT. Some brides wish to shine in traditional lehengas, while some others don’t mind experimentation and embracing attires that give them a rocking feeling! So be it the fad of minimalist lehengas, lehenga gowns, pastel lehengas, single coloured palette lehengas or simply offbeat lehengas, brides today are totally slaying it and raising the bar.

The Indian fashion design industry is booming with talented names that have redefined and carved a niche for themselves with their quirky lehenga designs. Our celebrity brides over the years have shown us just how to nail a contemporary lehenga. At her wedding reception, Neha Kakkar left everyone speechless by wearing a white lehenga. She broke the stereotype with her sartorial pick as traditionally, brides are not expected to wear white at Hindu wedding functions. She looked ethereal in a beautiful all-white ensemble. The feather details on her lehenga are the signature design of Falguni and Shane Peacock collections. For some glam, she paired her glittering white lehenga with beautiful diamond jewellery with green stones and traditional chooda. Likewise Priyanka Chopra also opted for a champagne-hued Falguni Shane Peacock lehenga with silver embellishments.

Anissa Malhotra ditched the predictable palette for her Sangeet when she stepped out in a Manish Malhotra metallic lehenga which comprised a cap-sleeved blouse dripping with crystals, a voluminous skirt, and a matching dupatta. The sparkling outfit was completely doused in silver embellishment, proving that there’s nothing quite like a bit of dazzle when it comes to bridal ensembles. Shloka Mehta Ambani’s sangeet lehenga was no less. Designed by Kresha Bajaj, the crystal love story lehenga detailing her and Akash’s entire story was hand embellished with over 50,000 crystals, sequins and glass beads! On the other hand, for her Mehndi, Bipasha Basu chose a breezy floral print lehenga complete with a sheer overlay by Anushree Reddy which was paired with a jacket style choli. Antara Motiwala chose a custom-made Manish Malhotra chikankari lehenga that featured floral artwork and pearls which was teamed with an aqua blue dupatta.

Just like celebrity brides, new-age real brides are setting newer benchmarks by exploring and embracing a number of contemporary lehenga design ideas. Brides today, don’t mind turning out in minimalist lehenga or geometric-print inspired lehenga for their wedding festivities. They are also increasingly looking at other colour-pallets apart from the usual red to nail their d-day look. Pastel-hued lehengas are a fad that are here to stay. Whether you’re looking for bridal lehenga ideas in shades of blue for contemporary brides or simply looking for some gorgeous party wear lehengas for the sister of the bride, you’re certainly spoilt for choices here.

If you’re keen on nailing your contemporary bridal look to the t, you can also pair your lehenga with interesting types of necklaces like satladas, navratans, chokers, raani haars, gulbandhs, bib necklaces,  guttapusalus and aadhd necklaces.

An Intimate Lockdown Celebrity Ring Ceremony: Actor Nithiin Gets Engaged to Shalini Kandukuri

A wedding has to be a grand celebration or nothing, right? Wrong. The four-month-long lockdown has taught us different and how! Weddings in India were always a grand affair but recently, given the pandemic situation and guest-list limitations, weddings are now simpler and smaller. This holds true even for celebrity weddings.

As soon as the term celebrity wedding is mentioned, we expect the whole shebang, right? Lights, camera, action! Uff… but like every other couple who plans on getting married during the lockdown, Tollywood actor Nithiin and his fiancé Shalini, decided to go ahead for a simple engagement ceremony to seal the deal.

Nithiin and his lady love Shalini Kandukuri are rumoured to have been dating for many years now and were initially planning a grand destination wedding in Dubai. However, given the situation, they have now opted for an intimate ceremony.

Above Images Courtesy: Ashwin Suresh Photography

Seen at the ceremony attended by close family members on both sides, the celebrity couple looked resplendent in traditional avatars.

While Nithiin chose to wear a white kurta-pyjama set, his fiancé Shalini looked stunning in a red Benarasi saree with embroidered border. The bride-to-be completed her looked with a stunning diamond choker with rubies and matching earrings. Not to miss her over-the-top diamond and emerald studded kamarbandh! She kept her overall look simple with natural flawless makeup and braided hair.

And this is not all – the beautiful lady wore a beautiful baby pink lehenga in brocade with an equally gorgeous diamond set.

Clearly the couple had a ball at their ceremony as the pictures speak for their happiness!

Ace Every Wedding Function Look With A Stellar Makeup Artist

It takes more than a degree to master an art and makeup is one such art that requires years of practice to gain perfection. A well-done makeup look not only uplifts your appearance but it also boosts your confidence.

And the key factor to gaining a flawless look is to keep it as natural as it can get. However, time and again we all come across brides who’s makeup overpowers other elements of her ensemble, unbalancing the overall attire. And that’s something you need to be particularly cautious about while getting your bridal makeup done.

Simply because these makeup experts don’t jump on the bandwagon like the rest. They deliver what you desire.

Aishwarya and Nikhil Orana Aurum New Delhi Wedding

“Kehte hain agar kisi cheez ko dil se chaho, to puri kainaa usse tumse milane ki koshish mein lag jata hai.” – Om Shanti Om

A very filmy dialogue, right? But for our couple Aishwarya and Nikhil this line rings true! Especially for the lovely lady Aishwarya 😉 Her and Nikhil’s love story began when she spotted him at a religious event and that too while watching on her laptop! “So, six years back, I was watching a live religious event on my laptop with my cousin where I saw a very handsome guy, I did not know who he was, I did not know his name, I did not know anything about him neither I saw him anywhere before but after looking at him, my cousin and I were like wow he’s so good looking! I think I was just 17 at the time and being a teenager, we all have crushes.” – Aishwarya.

While she started to crush on Nikhil from the very moment after spotting him at the event, the universe conspired to bring them together. The very next day, he appeared as ‘people you may know’ list on her Facebook profile.

She messaged him. And fortunately for her, at the time of her Facebook message to Nikhil, he was boarding the train to Shirdi for Sai Baba darshan. “And I believe in Sai Baba like anything. He is above all for me,” says Aishwarya.

Soon, both of them started interacting via WhatsApp and Facebook, and phone calls. Their bond grew stronger each day and soon blossomed into love. They first met on friendship day, two months after their first message. For Aishwarya, Nikhil was the one for her from the very beginning but she never really told him that. When Nikhil asked her out, she was ecstatic! They dated for six long years and it was only in 2019 that Nikhil popped the question of marriage.

However, like in any Indian love story, when it comes to marriage, the couple needs to have their parents’ consent. For Nikhil, his parents readily agreed but the same wasn’t the case with Aishwarya.

Aishwarya’s parents were upset not because Nikhil wasn’t an ideal match but because she chose to make her own decision. But soon they were on board too.

The Wedding Planning

The couple started their wedding shopping, their hunt for the perfect venue and other functions’ requirements six months prior to their date of the wedding. They both juggled work and their wedding arrangements. “For the entire period of six months, I went shopping or searching for venues or ideas after coming from work.” – Aishwarya.

They decided to tied the knot at The Orana Aurnum in New Delhi on the 9th of February 2020.

The wedding festivities kicked off with the Mata ki Chowki function on 1st February 2020.

For the engagement ceremony on 5th Feb, Aishwarya wore a full-flair floral gown in net with zarkan work and with a touch of sea green colour.

For her mehendi on 8th Feb, she wore a dark green velvet embroidered lehenga and an embroidered dupatta in gold in perfect contrast to her lehenga. She completed her look with magenta floral jewellery with pearls.

For her Haldi and choora, she wore a yellow crop-top and skirt ensemble in honour of the ceremonies. Her outfit consisted of a plain yellow one-shoulder crop top with a flared yellow skirt and a yellow georgette dupatta. She wore real flower jewellery with jasmine flowers and completed her look with fabulous Pataka bride earrings by ‘Kraftedwithhappiness’.

For her big day aka her wedding, she wore a mauve pink organza silk flared lehenga with carrot red floral embroidered and stone work. She had two dupattas – one in the same shade of pink and the other one in carrot red colour that she draped over her head.

Interestingly, while it was love at first sight for Aishwarya, she had never really confessed the same to her husband. He was completely unaware. She confessed her feelings to him only once their nuptials were completed.

An Intimate Small Wedding Amidst Lockdown: Ex-Miss India Koyal Rana Weds Businessman Ayush Dabas

There’s a certain charm about lockdown weddings, don’t you think? It reinstates the whole idea of ‘chat mangni, pat biyah’ and how! Under normal circumstances, couples meeting through an arranged match would want to spend more time together to get to know each other before they decide to take the plunge in holy matrimony. However, since the lockdown in India, and across the world, we have seen that couples who had just met or were in a relationship and planning their big fat wedding celebrations, suddenly decided to tie the knot either over a zoom call, google hangouts or have small intimate weddings amidst the pandemic.

And one such story is that of former Miss India, the lovely Koyal Rana. Koyal met Ayush, a Delhi-based businessman only a few months back. In fact, they met during the lockdown itself. Having met through their families, things moved really fast for this couple. And for the inquisitive ones, Koyal says, “it was a destined wedding!”

But how did Koyal and Ayush decide to be life partners so quickly? Well, their families met over tea and the couple was introduced to each other. Soon they got talking and spoke about education, spirituality and even history. Koyal was so enamoured that she never wanted the conversation to end!

They both realised they had many things in common and grew up believing the same value systems and similar aspirations. In short, this match was heaven sent! However, the couple did not exchange numbers. They did not speak for a week post their first meeting. Then Ayush called on Koyal’s mother’s number and they continued their conversation. They both decided to get married and go with the flow as everything felt right.

To further strengthen their match, when Koyal sent a piece of her written work to Ayush, he made some poignant observations about the project and Koyal was touched. Soon, they wrote lengthy emails and these emails turned into virtual love letters in no time. They decided to meet again and this time around, they figured out that they were meant to be together. Koyal says, “The most important decision of our lives, was the easiest one!”

But here’s the catch – the country was in quarantine and therefore, the typical big fat Indian weddings were a Big NO. But for Koyal this was the perfect setting. This is because she had always wanted an intimate wedding with a simple ceremony with her closest friends and family only. And a lockdown wedding presented her with this perfect opportunity. So, this lockdown, intimate wedding was a dream come true for her. Also, a small marriage ceremony does have its perks! In a small marriage ceremony, you can spend more quality time with your loved ones and it is easier to mingle and to have a conversation too. In short, great memories with people who matter the most!

The Quarantine Wedding

Like all Indian weddings, the wedding festivities kicked off with a Haldi function, followed by Sangeet and Mehendi. For her Mehendi and wedding, Koyal reached out to VowtoWow.co to help style her stunning outfits. Meenal Narula and Venika Khanna of VTW helped Koyal with the best outfits and styled her looks for the functions.

The Mehendi

For her mehendi, which was a fun yet laidback affair, Koyal wore orange linen pants with an embroidered blouse in peach and a ruffle-trimmed organza cape jacket in blush pink. She completed her look with a simple yet elegant layered diamond jewellery from Kotwala jewellers. Staying true to a simple wedding, Koyal opted for minimal bridal mehendi as well. And not to miss the matching mask to go with her outfit!

For her wedding, Koyal wore a stunning baby pink heavily embroidered lehenga. Her look was simple, with flawless makeup that enhanced her already beautiful features. She completed her look with an emerald layered haar and a diamond emerald necklace – all from Kotwala jewellers, a perfect contrast to her pink lehenga.

While weddings in India are huge affairs, given the current quarantine situation, the government norms allow only 50 pax events. Therefore, for their wedding, this couple was on the lookout for places to have a small wedding. And they narrowed down on a farmhouse in Delhi.

The wedding was hosted at a farmhouse in Delhi with only immediate family members in attendance. While Koyal had always wanted a small wedding, she did miss her friends and extended family members who couldn’t make it.
