Polki Lookbook: A Guide to One of the Most Trending Bridal Jewellery Options

A couple thousand years ago, we humans felt a desire to beautify ourselves. And ever since then, jewellery has become just about synonymous with every Indian woman. So it only justifies that on the most important day of her life, she would want to be adorned with the best, most exquisite works of unparalleled art. And rightfully so, the limitless range offered by Indian jewellery delivers just that and more for the gorgeous Indian bride.

No doubt, looking at the sea of equally mesmerizing options available to her, any bride-to-be would be stumped about which one gets to be the lucky wedding-day pick. So to make your hunt for the perfect a little less manic, we bring to you Polki jewellery: one of the most trending styles that would make an excellent choice for your big day.

What is Polki jewellery and what technique does it use?

In layman’s terms, Polki is a term that simply refers to raw, uncut diamonds in its natural state. Having its roots in the Mughal era, Polki jewellery has been around for a long, long time. It is unrefined, unprocessed and has no artificial enhancement done to it; because of which, it shines a lot more and is much more expensive than its sister, Kundan.

The technique: The diamonds are placed on a gold foil that adds to the brilliant shine when they reflect light. They are then further adorned with other precious stones.

Polki and Kundan are often confused because they both essentially comprise of stone-studded gold but a small difference is that while Polki jewellery has gold foil studded with only uncut, precious stones, Kundan jewellery also uses glass imitations studded over gold or even silver.

Maintenance

Polki jewellery is extremely high-maintenance as it loses its shine if exposed to moisture or dust. An effective way to keep your precious pieces as good as new is to avoid keeping them in the velvet boxes that they are sold in. Instead, keep them in airtight containers and make sure to wrap them in butter paper or cotton so as to keep the moisture away.

Do not keep all your Polkis in the same container as the clashing of one diamond against another can result in scratches. To ensure that they look shiny, soak them in warm water mixed with detergent. Wipe them with a clean cloth after a few hours and there you have it.
Rihanna will be proud. 😛

Note to keep them away from cleansers that contain Chlorine as this will not bode well for the gold.

Pricing

Polki jewellery is very expensive, seeing as it is made of natural, uncut diamonds. The value of each piece depends on the carat, clarity, colour and cut of the diamonds used in the making of it.
The average price of a Polki choker would be around 4-15 lakhs, while an entire set can cost up to 3 crores, depending on the design, number of stones and workmanship used.

The price range of Polki is relatively much higher than any Kundan piece which can be attained anywhere between 50,000 to 2 lakhs.

Return/Resale values

Because of its uncut nature, the demand in the global market is always high. The value and market price is kept steady and also considered a good investment.

It certainly does have its drawbacks since the gold content in these sets is considerably low as it is only used to make the frames which are filled with lac on the inside.
Some jewellers do however, add gold to the back of the piece as this would increase its pricing considerably.

A good idea would be to pick classic designs that will be in style even 10 years from now rather than going for something that is trendy just to keep up with the times. Reselling and resetting your gold and diamonds often is never a good idea as you only get back 90% on resale, losing about 10% every time you return or exchange the pieces.

Where

The best place to get authentic Polki jewellery would be Johari bazaar, Jaipur. Rajasthan is also an excellent source of these precious stones.
If you don’t want to make the trip, prestigious jewellery stores in metro cities like Tanishq and Amrapali also have a significantly brilliant collection of Polki pieces.

GLASSES / JARS / BOTTLES

These everyday household items are perfect for creating some of the prettiest wedding decorations, centrepieces, table settings and a number of other stuff. GO GREEN

This is by far the most economical and eco-friendly wedding decoration idea. If you have enough potted plants at home then go ahead and make use of them for your wedding décor. If you don’t, then all you need to do is go to a local store, pick up some flowers, plants and anything green and arrange them aesthetically. We assure you that these would not go to waste after the wedding as they would look great as décor as well and all that extra oxygen at home will certainly do you good! 😛
If you’re clueless about how to go about placing them, these should give you some fabulous ideas.

Gaurav & Khushboo Hyderabad : Big Fat Indian Wedding Celebration held at Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad

Big Fat Indian Weddings will never cease to impress us! The larger-than-life wedding stage décor, lighting set ups that could give a Bollywood movie a run for its money! Well, Gaurav and Khushboo’s destination wedding held at Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad was exactly that! Loads of music, dancing, secret meetings and buckets full of love. This arranged-turned-love marriage of Gaurav and Khushboo took us back to the wedding times in Band Baaja Baarat #NoKidding. A wedding whipped up by Wedding Planners, Bling Mushrooms that did its wedding venue full justice! Right from the Punjabi themed mehndi where  a personalized photobooth was set up right to the reception where Khushboo stunned in a red and navy toned Rohit Bal bridal lehenga.

This was an arranged marriage. But I don’t believe that to be true. Our grandfathers were in the same class until 10th in Rajasthan. Like a regular arranged marriage scene, my father saw him in Delhi, came back to Bangalore and told me about him and I decided to meet him. He came down alone to meet me in Bangalore (which I did not expect, because the families usually accompany for such matters). He realized I was not opening up much at home, so we decided to have coffee outside. Fun evening talking about ourselves to each other led to making us realize we could meet again for lunch the day after. As planned we met for lunch again and then family dinner and he flew back. We kept in touch through texts, calls for the next few days because we were supposed to give the decision to our parents. And I was loving this phase of just being in touch with him. Then as expected the pressure was building up on us to give the verdict. And so whatever I am going to be telling you next is something only very close family and friends know. – Khushboo

PixelStory.in captured this Big Fat Indian wedding (held true to it’s name) in all its grandiose and glamour. What to look out for as your scroll through this destination wedding held at Ramoji Film City, Hyderabad – the stunning lighting of the wedding, the wedding band in crystal dangling umbrellas and Khushboo’s stunning chaddar embellished with lights!

Pretty Pink Hindu Wedding held at The Grande Imperial Banquets, Andheri

The element of crazy was high in this wedding shot beautifully by The Cheesecake Project! Trisha and Jivesh, a Mumbai-Hyderabad connection made purely by destiny and developed over endless chats and coffee dates. They tied the knot at The Grande Imperial Banquets, Andheri with all the right elements of sass, love and beauty filled into their celebration.

As a couple and as a family we always knew we needed to get married in a Gurudwara. We’re both Sindhi and there were no second thoughts on this. The minute I walked through the aisle at the gurudwara. I saw Jivesh turn and look at me with this big grin on his face. And it just hit me that BOY! This is the man I love. This is the man I’m gonna be with the rest of my life and this is my Today and my Tomorrow. I can re-live that moment every single day of my life and I will not get enough of it.”

The Grande Imperial Banquets, Andheri served to be a perfect space for Trisha and Jivesh’s glitter, glam love-filled wedding reception. They also had their sangeet at the same venue. An optimal way to use space and time and stay away from the extra mess of logistics all at once! Both Trisha and Jivesh picked this venue for its beautiful banquet space as well as the amazing facilities The Grande Imperial Banquets, Andheri offered.

Pre-Wedding Shoot at an Old Fort

Their pre-wedding shoot held at an old rustic fort in Hyderabad played a perfect backdrop to Trisha and Jivesh’s young, fresh love. A beautifully flared anarkalli along with a maangtikka that took our breath away – it defined Trisha’s quirky, out-if-the-box-personality brilliantly. While Jivesh’s charming face and classic white shirt played a perfect match to her.

The Mehndi

This gorg bride had her mehndi at Oriental Residency Rooftop, Khar with all the right elements of beauty and desi-ness. Her half-maathapatti and stunning mix-matched lehenga in hues of bright yellow, red and green was all that a modern bride is made of! Designed by her very own best-friends mother Mrs. Padma Surakanti!

The Wedding

The wedding was a simple, sweet affair with pink being a dominant theme throughout. This stunning bride opted to wear a bubblegum pink lehenga and extravagant kundan and pearl jewellery while Jivesh kept it sharp in a beige sherwani paired with a red dushala.

Your advice for Brides-to-be

“It’s okay if you go for that pizza. It’s okay to not be the perfectionist. It’s okay if a single trial is gone bad. It’ll all be okay in time. We as brides stress so much and give the peripherals so much importance that we forget that these days will never come back. Instead eat plenty of mommy and Daadi’s food because you’re not going to be getting it like before. Get pampered by them as much as you can! And yes go to that spa! Go get the pedi. And live single every minute happily because babe, no matter how hard you try for everything to be perfect there will be mistakes! But who cares? It’s YOUR DAY! And that’s all that matters!”

5 Things to Look Forward to in a Parsi Wedding

Well, before you drift into a daydream about Prawn patio and Chicken farcha, let’s talk a bit about rituals in a Parsi wedding – yes that’s where you can have all these delicacies! Now that we have your attention, can we please talk about the adorable madness – that is a Parsi wedding?

Like other weddings in India, Parsi weddings too have different rituals, signifying different things. There are quite a few rituals which are unique to their culture and must be seen to be understood. We bring to you the top 5 things in a Parsi wedding ceremony that you absolutely must not miss!

RUPIA PERAVANU

RUPIA PERAVANU

This is more of a pre-wedding ritual but is an important step that leads to the main event! Once the couple informs their parents about their decision, the parents sit down to discuss the prospect. Once the wedding is finalized, Rupia Peravanu is performed to mark the official coming together of the two families. It may be considered as a modern day engagement and is carried out at the bride-to-be’s home. The groom’s side visit the home of the would-be bride and bless the bride with silver coins (hence the word Rupia) in a brocaded bag. The home is decorated with chalk designs and garlands (made of flowers or knitted with wool) and it is generally the women who engage in this ceremony.

ACHU MICHU RITUAL

ACHU MICHU RITUAL

This is performed almost before every ritual and is believed to ward off evil eye. They also perform nahan to cleanse the person physically and spiritually. Achu Michu is once again performed when the bride and groom reach the venue. Their mothers perform this ritual by applying a vermillion tila (or tilak as more popularly known) on the foreheads and pressing uncooked rice over it. They may also put on the garlands and give the bride and groom a bouquet and a coconut wrapped in string.

WEDDING ATTIRE

WEDDING ATTIRE

Parsi weddings are also carried out in all-white wedding attires. The bride is usually dressed in a white blouse and sari which is often heavily embroidered. Different necklines and heirloom or statement jewellery lend a sophisticated touch to the bridal attire. The Parsi groom is dressed in a white robe called a dugli and it is paired with white trousers. It is also essential that the head be covered during the ceremony. While the bride covers her head with a part of the sari, the groom wears a ceremonial hat or a prayer cap. Dressed in immaculate white, the couple is a sight to behold!
